Pachai Sundakkai Dal Gotsu for Ven Pongal and Idli - Traditional Madurai Gotsu Recipe

Pachai Sundakkai / Green Sundakkai Dal Gotsu is one of the delicious combination for Ven Pongal, Rava Pongal and even for Chapathis. The green sundakkai / Turkey Berry has got excellant health benefits it aids in digestion, lowers blood glucose levels, best diuretic properties and also helps to reduce fever. Though it is bitter in taste it is used in food for its medicinal purposes. This is a very new recipe where we use toor dal and pachai sundakkai. The dish tastes yummy and you will never get the bitter taste because we remove the seeds.


Ingredients for making Pachai Sundakkai Dal Gotsu


Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Pachai sundakkai / Turkey Berry - 1 cup
Onions - 1
Tomato - 1
Green Chillies - 1
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp.
Red Chilly - 1
Salt as required
Mustard seeds - 1 tsp.
cumin seeds - 1 tsp.
Urad dal - 1 tsp.
A sprig of curry leaves

Method for making Pachai Sundakkai Dal Gotsu


1. Wash the green sundakkai and then deseed it. You can remove the seeds by crushing them with a hand pestle and then soaking in water to remove the seeds.

2. In a pressure pan add the toor dal, chopped onions, green chillies and the deseeded sundakkai along with turmeric powder, salt and required amount of water. Wait for 4 whistles.

3. Heat oil in a tadka pan, splutter the mustard seeds, add the urad dal, cumin seeds, curry leaves and red chilly. Add this to the contents in the cooker.

4. Mash everthing with a wooden ladle or mattu kombu and serve hot.

Pachai Sundakkai Dal Gotsu is ready to be served.

Variation: You can replace green tomatoes in the place of sundakkai.
