Ingredients for making Sorakkai Kondakadalai Kootu
Gram dal - 1/2 cupBottle gourd - 2 cups chopped
Cooked Chickpeas - 1/2 cup (optional)
Onion - 1 medium
Tomato - 1
A pinch of Turmeric powder
Salt to taste
To Temper
Oil - 2 tsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp.
Cumin seeds 1/2 tsp.
Asofoetida a generous pinch
A sprig of Curry leaves
To Roast and Grind
Oil - 1/2 tsp.
Peanuts - 2 tbsp.
Red chillies - 2
Cumin Seeds - 1/4 tsp.
Pepper corns - 1/2 tsp.
Grated coconut - 4 tbsp.
Method for making Sorakkai Kondakadalai Kootu
1. Wash and peel the skin of the bottle gourd, remove the center portion and chop the remaining portions into small cubes. Chop the onions and tomatoes.2. Heat 1 tsp. oil in a kadai and roast the ingredients given under "to roast n grind", cool and then grind in to a coarse powder in a mixer.
3. Wash the gramdal, add the turmeric powder and cook this in a pressure cooker by adding 3 cups of water.
4. Add the chopped onion, tomato, bottle gourd and enough salt, close the lid and cook for a whistle.
5. Add the cooked kondaikadalai and ground powder, stir well for 3 minutes.
Now the Bottlegourd or Sorakkai Kootu is ready to be served with hot rice or rotis.
