Milagai Killi Potta sambar - Traditional Sambar from Grandmothers Kitchen Style

Milagai Killi potta sambar is one of the easy and simple sambar which can be made within few minutes. This is easy to prepare because we do not add any veggies and so no need for waiting for the veggies to be cooked. This sambar tastes good than the usual sambar, here instead of adding the sambar podi we use red and green chillies. Try this easy sambar and serve with Potato Roast. The combination tastes yummy.



Ingredients for making Milagai Killi potta sambar 

Thoor dal - 1 cup
Onion -2
Tomato - 2
Garlic - 5 cloves
Green chillies - 3
Asafoetida - 2 pinches
Tamarind - Gooseberry size ball
Turmeric Powder - ½ tsp
A small bunch of Coriander leaves
Salt as required

For Tempering
Oil - 2 tsp.
Mustard - 1 tsp.
Urad dal - 1 tsp.
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp.
Dry Red Chillies - 3
A sprig of Curry Leaves

Method for making Milagai Killi potta sambar

1. Wash the thoor dal and soak in water for 15 to 20 minutes.

2. Pressure cook the dal by adding 2 cups of water with the required turmeric powder and asafoetida. Allow to cook for 3 or 4 whistles.

3. Mash the dal with a ladle or mattu, add enough water and keep aside. This sambar should be somewhat watery in consistency.

4. Extract the juice from tamarind with ¼ cup of water and keep it aside.

5. Heat oil in a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, add cumin seeds, urad dal, dry red chillies, curry leaves and sauté well. Next add the onions, saute till it becomes transparent, add the green chillies, garlic, tomatoes and sauté well.

6.Now add the cooked dal, tamarind extract, salt and allow it to boil for 10 min.

7. Switch off the stove and garnish it with chopped coriander leaves.
