Kozhukattai - Traditional Thengai Vella Poorana Kozhukatai / Coconut Jaggery Kozhukattai Recipe - Vinayaga Chaturthi Festival Recipe

Kozhukattai is one of the traditional sweet dishes made using rice flour, coconut and jaggery. This dish is one of the popular festival recipes made during Vinayaga Chaturthi. Kozhukattai is offered to Lord Ganesha on Ganesh Chaturthi and it is also given as prasadams in many Ganesh temples. Ingredients to make Thengai Vella Poorana Kozhukattai

Raw rice – 1 cup
Powdered jaggery-1/2 cup
grated coconut-1/2 cup
Cardomom-2
Ghee -2 teaspoon
Gingely oil-1 tablespoon

Method for making Thengai Vella Poorana Kozhukattai

1. Wash and Soak the raw rice for an hour, then dry this in a towel and grind it in a mixie to a powder form when it is dry.

2. Take a heavy bottomed vessel and boil some amount of water (1 cup of ground rice needs 2 cups of water approximately) and then add the ground rice, gingely oil and stir well with a ladle till you get a smooth ball like consistency.

3. Divide the dough into balls and close and keep aside.

4. In a heavy bottomed vessel boil 1/4 cup of water, add the jaggery and after it gets fully dissolved strain the impurities.

5. To this add the grated coconut and the powdered cardamom and stir well till dry.

6. Take the ball-sized dough pat it to a small cup and place the thengai pooranam and close it in the form of ball or into a semicircle.

7. Now place all the Kozhukattais over the white cloth in the idli cooker and steam cook for 5 to 10 minutes.

Now the Thengai Vella Kozhukattai is ready.
