Karuveppilai podi in Traditional Style - Homemade Curry Leaves Powder

Karuveppilai podi is one of the healthy podi or powder which can be mixed with rice. Curry leaves have got great medicinal value and this is one of the easy way of cooking and consuming this. The curry leaves are rich in calcium and vitamin A and the Consumption of this prevents hairfall and premature greying. This is also good for all menstruating women. This can also be used just as idli podi with idli and dosa.

Karuveppilai podi | Curry leaves powder

Ingredients for making  Karuveppilai podi (Curry leaves powder)

2 cups - Curry leaves
A tsp of Cumin seeds
A tsp of Kadalai paruppu
A tsp of Broken urad dal
6 - Red chillies
A tbsp of Coriander seeds
Oil for frying 
Lemon sized tamarind
A pinch of asafoetida
Salt to taste

Method for making Karuveppilai podi (Curry leaves powder)

1. First dry roast all the ingredients one by one. Each ingredient should be roasted separately and care should be taken that it should not be over roasted. 

2. The Bengal gram and urad dal can be roasted together till they become golden brown in colour. 

3. Wash and dry the Curry leaves and then roast till it becomes crisp. You can add asafoetida along with the curry leaves. Always use the rock asafoetida as it gives more aroma. 

4. For frying the chillies you can use a little amount of oil. 

5. Coriander seeds and cumin seeds can be roasted together just for 5 mins in low flame or till the smell of coriander comes out.

6. Cool all the ingredients, grind the dals and then add the other ingredients along with tamarind and the required amount of salt. 


7. Store the powder in an air tight container.
Now the Karuveppillai powder is ready to be served with white rice and ghee.
