Traditional Sambhar Sadam - Tamilnadu Style Sambar Rice - Easy to make Lunchbox Recipe

Sambhar Sadam or Sambhar rice is one of the most popular Tamilnadu Variety rice which is served as prasadams in many temples. This is different from Bisi Bele Bhath which has its origin from Karnataka. Sambhar rice is one of the easy to make rice recipe which can be packed as lunch for kids and also for office. This is a mixture of rice, dal and veggies which is a one pot meal which can be cooked very soon.

Ingredients for making Sambhar Sadam

Toor Dal - 1/2 cup

Raw rice - 1 cup

Sambhar Powder - 2 tbsp.

Salt - to taste

Mixed vegetables of your choice - 2 cups

Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tbsp.

Onions - 1

Tomatoes - 1 large

Oil  - 2 tsp

Ghee - 2tsp

Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp.

A sprig of Curry leaves

broken red chillies - 2


Method for making Sambhar Saadam


1. Soak the Toor Dal in water for 15 to 20 minutes.

2. Chop the vegetables into cubes they should not be too large or small. You can use potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, beans, drumstick, etc.

3. Wash and drain the raw rice.

4. In a 2-litre pressure pan, add the Soaked Dal and washed rice with turmeric powder and salt. Add about 4  cups of water and pressure cook for 3 - 4 whistles.

5. Heat oil and ghee in a Kadai, splutter the mustard seeds and add the curry leaves and broken red chillies.

6. Add onions fry till transparant and then add tomatoes, chopped vegetables and saute well. Next add the sambhar powder and required amount of salt. Add water and cook till vegetables are done. Next add the tamarind water and allow to boil.

7. Open the pressure cooker and add the above contents and mix well. Allow this to  cook in a low flame for 5 minutes till everything gets blended well.

8. Add fried cashews and garnish with coriander leaves.

Sambhar rice is ready to be packed for lunch with papad and potato chips.
